Louise Gasser Kirtley Memorial
In partnership with the Daviess County Bar Association, AAUW-Owensboro honored Louise Gasser Kirtley, the “first lady of the law” in Daviess County, with the dedication on August 26, 2020, of a memorial to her work. The Daviess County Fiscal Court and the City of Owensboro also partnered in the effort. Read the article about the dedication and See the photos.
Mrs. Kirtley’s firsts include:
- First woman attorney in Daviess County
- First woman president of the Bar Association of Daviess County
- First woman judge in Daviess County
- First woman from Daviess County elected to the Kentucky General Assembly
In addition, she was a founding member of our local AAUW branch!
The memorial stands on the lawn of the Daviess County Courthouse facing Second Street, where Judge Kirtley’s law offices were once located.
Women’s Equality Day August 26, 2021
The dedication of the memorial took place in 2020 on the 100th anniversary, but due to the pandemic, a public ceremony was postponed. We finally were able to celebrate 101 years of the right to vote with a parade down Second Street and a program on the Courthouse lawn.
Future Memorials
AAUW continues to work on monuments and historical markers to commemorate the exceptional women who wove the fabric of Owensboro and Daviess County.
