Jolabokaflod

The Jolabokaflod or Christmas Book Flood is the Icelandic tradition of giving and receiving books at Christmas. Recipients are encouraged to start reading their new books after the main evening meal on Christmas Eve.

We’ve adopted this tradition as a way to encourage reading and literacy with our partner Girls, Inc. Every December, our members contribute to the purchase of books; we make age-appropriate purchases, wrap the books and present one book to each girl. In this, we assure that each child receives at least one present at Christmastime.

More than 60 girls took home books in December 2019.
